The Alberta Champions Cup tournament has a new ’04 Silver Major champion this past weekend. Coach John Schneider led his ’04 PeeWee Major spring team to the Silver championship! This was a vastly improved team from two weeks previous where, at the Thrive Spring Challenge tournament, the team finished 7th.
The Chargers had outstanding goaltending from Lucas Cadger and Axtyn Spence. Cadger and Spence split the games evenly throughout the tournament and the coaching staff had no hesitation sticking to the rotation for every game. Team confidence was high.
But the team dominated in almost every other aspect of the game as well. Scoring was fairly uniform across all three lines, with a few players emerging as scoring leaders. PeeWee Prospect selections, Colton Schmidt (17pts), Ashton Funk (16pts) and Dominique Cyr (11 pts) put up great scoring numbers in the 6 games played and half the team scored at least a point per game! The ’04 Chargers cruised through the preliminary pool games, going 4-0 and outscoring the opposition 33-6.
The games certainly got more difficult in the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the Chargers held a 6-1 lead over the Jr. Eagles. The lead was eroded until at one point, the score was 6-5. But the Chargers held on for a 7-5 win and a chance to win the tournament in the championship game.
In the final match of the weekend, the Chargers met the Knights. In the preliminary game, the Chargers won that game easily by a score of 6-1. Schneider and the Chargers knew that this would be a different game and that the Knights would not go down so easily. Both teams played hard and it was a back and forth affair. But in the end, with a late empty net goal while short-handed, the Chargers prevailed 7-5 to win the Silver ’04 Championship.
Congratulations boys! A very well deserved win.
